Interview: Eric Elick (Film Composer) (July 2016)

Eric Elick - Composer of Films from LA.
Eric Elick is a fine Composer on the Indie Film Scene and Musician. His name first came to my attention on Emma Dark's Seize The Night (2015) and on films like RATS (2016) and Egomaniac (2016). Please check out his Facebook event page for the Seize The Night Scorehttp://bit.ly/2ak0u0Q. Also, please see his Soundcloud Profile. Pre-Order: Seize The Night OST. Eric's Official Website.

What age did you start making music?
I started making music at 19 when my brother purchased his first synthesizer, the Alesis QS6! I saw him making music and it looked like a lot of fun, so I made a mini album for my family composing a song for each of them that represented how I viewed them in a musical way and gave it to them on cassette tape that Christmas!

How did you start composing for Short Films? Seize The Night? Egomaniac? Etc.
It all started in 2014 when my cousin, Damon Rickard, co-directed his first short film entitled "The Tour".  I saw promotional images he was posting on FaceBook so I took those and created three music cues with the images like a slide show and then sent them to him asking him for the opportunity to score the film!  Damon and his co-director, Alex Mathieson gave me a shot and the rest is history!  The main theme in "The Tour" was the cue that landed me that job I came to find out later in subsequent discussions with Damon.  I was very happy with the high production values that went into the film; I certainly upgraded my home studio to do the score justice and have been upgrading ever since!  All of my other film work with other directors grew from that first project and I have had the wonderful opportunity to team up with Damon (on The Package and now his new film, Dissociative) and Alex (on The Jitterman) again.  I was lucky to get in on a quality project as my first film and forever grateful to both Damon and Alex for believing in me and giving me my first break!

"Seize the Night" came about through a direct referral from Damon and Annette Rickard to Emma Dark when she was in the process of looking for a composer for her film.  I became aware of the referral when I woke up one morning, now that's a great way to wake up!  Emma was and has been a wonderful director to work with and I have learned so much from her and she continues to support my efforts (including the Seize the Night Official Soundtrack release) for which I am ever grateful to her.  Emma Dark communicated to me later that she chose me to score Seize the Night after hearing one of my cues on SoundCloud, "Hell's Labyrinth".  This cue was actually inspired by Jen & Sylvia Soska's "See No Evil 2" movie.  I had just met them at ScreamFestLA in 2014 when "The Tour" as well as SNE2 were premiering and I enjoyed that movie enough to create that song inspired by it.  No one has heard this story before, so there's your exclusive!  You can listen to it here: https://soundcloud.com/ericelickmusic/hells-labyrinth-october-28-29-2014

My involvement in Egomaniac came about through referrals from other directors to Kate Shenton and she approached me about doing the score to Egomaniac after viewing videos that I had with music on my YouTube in addition to my ability to create various styles of music.  It was an amazing working relationship through the entire scoring process from the beginning as Kate was very easy to work with and helpful in her feedback of cues as well as determining specifics of where she wanted music in the film.  Even in the face of disaster (my computer literally starting to die a slow death while I was composing for Egomaniac), Kate was amazing and understanding through the arduous process of attempting to fix my computer and then chucking that idea and then having a computer specialist building a high end cutting edge custom made studio computer.  THAT whole process took a couple of months, and Kate was amazing through the entire process despite deadlines approaching (which we made!).  I'm set with this new studio computer for the next few years at least!  I am very excited that Egomaniac is premiering at this year's FrightFest in London which I will be attending!  CryptTVUK has been wonderfully supportive of the film and I am excited to see the response of the public after it premieres!

What is your favorite genre of music, if you can answer that?
I wouldn't say I have a favorite genre of music as film scores could be just about any kind of music.  I primarily listen to film scores now a days.  I listen for pleasure, but also at the same time I am constantly studying how other composers have approached orchestration and what emotional effect their musical choices make on me, the listener.  I try to learn from that and implement it in my own work from a technical side.  The emotional side of the music I produce is primarily inspired by the imagery of the scene I am scoring and secondarily by the discussion with the director regarding the emotional trajectory of the film as a whole as well as in each scene.

What are your favorite instruments to play?
Any keyboard instrument!  I have a special place in my heart for the harpsichord, as that instrument inspired me to learn the piano.  I have been in a love affair with the piano since I seriously committed to learning it at 19!

Any ideas to go into directing yourself?
I will always first and foremost be a composer, but as an overall creative I have dabbled in all aspects of film making as I just love creating things, even as far as creating a micro short "Knock" that I did back in April of this year that received a good response on my social media pages.  I have been studying cinematography, sound recording, photography, visual effects and so on since 2014 in order to be able to communicate in a more informed manner with directors, editors, and other members of crew regarding film making processes as well as to produce my own content as a composer.  I think it has improved my insight into the entire film making process. Multimedia is definitely the way to go now a days from a marketing standpoint.  I have always been a very involved composer supporting projects I am part of or that I believe in, in any way that I can, and I think the film composing field as a whole needs to get out there more and increase awareness of what we do in our field and its (sometimes overlooked) importance in film, ironic as that may sound.  Many times the music can come as an after thought in the post-production process (in addition to its budget), but a composer can be useful in the pre-production and primary production processes as well!

Thank you for this opportunity to interview, John! I really enjoyed it!

FILM NEWS: LA based composer Eric Elick releases stunning industrial score (July 2016)

Composer Eric Elick to Release Seize The Night Music Score.
LA based composer Eric Elick releases stunning industrial score to Emma Dark’s epic short film SEIZE THE NIGHT.

American composer Eric Elick has been making quite a buzz on the indie film scene recently.  Having scored eight short films and a feature in just under two years with additional projects to be announced later this year, Eric now sees his first movie soundtrack release.  Eric’s moody industrial score for Emma Dark’s award-winning British short film SEIZE THE NIGHT has been complimented by film critics and moviegoers alike.  SEIZE THE NIGHT’s stand-alone album release came after an unusually high demand from fans of the vampires vs. werewolves action-horror, which has seen an immense amount of popularity over the past year.

Eric had this to say about the release:  "I'm excited to release the soundtrack to the public so that people have a way to enjoy the music when not necessarily watching the film, and to possibly introduce the film to a new audience who may have not been aware of the film before hearing the music."

The digital download will be available to purchase from all major on-line distributors from 5th August 2016, and fans can keep up-to-date with developments by joining Eric’s Facebook event here http://bit.ly/2ak0u0Q.  Purchasing a copy of the soundtrack helps support independent composer Eric, and you get to listen to his amazing score any time you like.

If you haven't seen SEIZE THE NIGHT you can watch the film and hear the soundtrack here: https://vimeo.com/164918250

REVIEW: A Convenient Store - Directed by Susan M. Connor (July 2016)

A Film by Susan M. Conner.
Plot: An small time thief robs a Convenience Store on Halloween night. It's an evening with a lot of tricks and very few treats. Short film by Susan M. Conner. Starring David Ferreira and David Witt. Run-time: 19 mins.

A Convenient Store is a quirky little adventure from the USA. It features Zombies at Halloween, a very "convenient" time. It has Comedy elements, too. It is very nicely shot and very independent. It has had a good reaction at Film Festivals and Conner has a great style of Comedy timing, as well. Conner also makes an appearance in the film.

I give this funny a 3 1/2 out of 5 and it is worth a look. A cool, kooky little flick for Women In Film lovers everywhere.

Director Susan M. Conner.

This one even towers the 2014 Legendary Pictures version seen in the west a few years back! Will it be a success? Will it spawn a new series? I really hope so as other G movies are in the work in Hollywood, too.

REVIEW: Burial Ground aka The Zombie Dead - @88_Films (July 2016)

Wow! Burial Ground is a Schlock-Horror Zombie B-Movie Classic! A sleaze-fest indeed mixed in with classic Italian gore! It's silly, it's fun, it's gross, too! NOTE: Above is the Beyond Terror Dvd Review!

Plot: A professor unearths the Living dead where they attack guests at a nearby mansion - it's that simple for the set-up in this Zombie flick!

I remember growing up watching BG on VHS rental with my dad and didn't quite get the adult themes until repeated viewings! I blame actor, Peter Bark! It's a very entertaining, midnight kinda film is BG. 88 Films recently bought it out with tons of special features, which is good news for fans! And the one-liners in this film: "I'm your Friend!" says the hapless professor to a re-animated zombie coming for him. "Mamma, this cloth smells like Death!" - damn you, Peter Bark, again.

The film is worth a watch. I found it silly as just as shocking the way classic 80's Italian Horror should be. It's pretty fast-paced and the zombies appear quickly and some even use tools and sharp objects to get their victims. The only annoying thing is that cliches come quick as in you could run from the Zombies if you really tried in their slowness. It features some nice-looking ladies, though! Directed by Andrea Bianchi.

88 Films packs BURIAL GROUND with tons of Features!

REVIEW: Talk of the Dead (2016) (Zombie Satire) (July 2016)

Talk of the Dead - A Zombie Satire Short Indie Film!
Talk of the Dead is a UK/Austria satire horror short! It was written/produced by SearchMyTrash's Micheal Haberfelner. It stars Lynn Lowry and Eirian Cohen (who also Producers) who are horror/indie regulars. The film is a part-comedy and satire (as mentioned) - it is clever and mixes it up with the likes of Lowry (an american scream queen) playing an executive, defending her company which allegedly starts a zombie-apocalypse. It's nice that it mixes up the across seas actors, cast and crew. Directed by Eddie Bammeke.

Interesting enough, a feature is due to shoot in future - "I'm Doing My Part! There's No Such Thing As Zombies!".

REVIEW: The Thin Man (2015) (Feature Film - Horror) (July 2016)

The Thin Man... Coming Soon from the Redshaw Brothers.
Plot: With hopes of making an epic viral Youtube video on the Thin Man curse, Bayden, Dylan and Jordan go in search of the titular character.

This is found footage horror based on Bayden Redshaw's short film on Youtube, simply called The Thin Man. It is a feature version that does run for 15 minutes shy of 2 hours in the cut I saw. The lead actors play themselves and there is some bad language through-out the feature.

It's a very ambitious feature film effort by the Redshaw brothers (Bayden & Dylan Redshaw). It uses a few issues that are seen in young people's lives like relationships and the search for internet stardom! There is horror and some uneasiness when The Thin Man turns up for his victims. The acting and joking around by the lads is quite convincing. The scares are good it is best watched in the dark like most horror films should be!

What I thought was clever, was Bayden using his real-life illness and issues and playing them into the story of The Thin Man. Quite clever and raw. It's an urban legend come to life! Spooky stuff. This feels like untapped talent from Australia
